A new FOCUS. Welcome!

Published on 29.07.2025

You are in FOCUS, the new HSG FOCUS. What used to be a university magazine is now a platform for everyone interested in HSG and for everyone who wants to know what researchers at this unique university are working on and thinking. HSG FOCUS is the landing point for HSG insight into important events that matter.

So stay in FOCUS. Because the issue you have in front of you is constantly changing… and will be growing. This new HSG content will be continuously updated and will provide a wide-ranging amount of information — from a collection of links, to reports from other top universities, think tanks, and knowledge platforms – and will include your personal contributions.

Because you can comment on all articles, ask questions, and join the discussion, you will become part of the HSG FOCUS community, which exchanges views on current issues in a factual, respectful, and interested manner. Simply log in. With an HSG email address, simply log in with your HSG password. You can also easily create a login with any other email address. When you login, you will be able to comment and will be informed of new content each time you visit.

Another new feature is that you can have the text articles read aloud to you. This allows you to stay focused, whether you are in the car, out for a walk, or cooking. But that's not all. At the end of each article, our authors provide personal media tips on their respective topics. That means even more background, context, and focus. Let yourself be inspired. You can send us your feedback and suggestions for improvement at kommunikationunisg.ch.This will help us to continuously improve HSG FOCUS, including its technical aspects. We look forward to your suggestions.

And even though this editorial is getting long, let's move on to the content. After all, that's what the platform is all about. The first issue focuses on the "Crisis of the West". Prof. Dr. Christoph Heusgen discusses the "transformation of the West", while Prof. Dr. James Davis looks at "Europe's new nuclear reality". In a long background video by science editor Daniel Sager, HSG researchers answer the question of whether Europe can still afford its values if it wants to remain competitive.

Anyone talking about the West cannot ignore the USA. Prof. Dr. Tomas Casas Klett therefore applies a new concept of elites developed at HSG to Trump's America. Prof. Dr. Martin Wolf looks at "Trump's tariff policy and the exorbitant privilege". Spoiler: If the 47th President of the USA were interested in a deep dive into this topic, he probably would not be pleased…  but because this platform is free, the editors at HSG FOCUS are not afraid of punitive tariffs.

Do you know Oren Cass? The founder of the think tank American Compass is, as Prof. Dr. Claudia Brühwiler shows, one of the theorists of a new US conservatism. Surprisingly, what this right-wing thought leader is calling for is quite left-wing. He is an interesting figure for anyone interested in the intellectual background of the MAGA movement. But enough editorialising. Immerse yourself in the new HSG FOCUS. Stay focused and enjoy.
